Episode 33: You Don't Have to Earn Rest

Ashley Robinson | OCT 20, 2026

You Don't Have to Earn Rest

I have a question.

Why do we suddenly become comfortable resting once we're sick?

If you have a fever, nobody expects you to prove you've earned the couch.

If you hurt yourself, you don't need to finish the laundry before you're allowed to sit down.

But if you're just…

tired?

Overstimulated?

Mentally tapped out?

Done with people for today?

Now suddenly we need evidence.

Did I do enough today?

Maybe I should finish this first.

I haven't worked out.

The kitchen isn't clean.

I still have emails.

Somewhere along the way, a lot of us learned that rest is something you receive after productivity.

And because productivity never actually ends, neither does the waiting.

“I'll Rest When I'm Done” Is a Trap

There will always be something else you could do.

Always.

One more email.

One more load of laundry.

One more task.

One more thing to organize.

One more wellness habit you could squeeze in.

So if your rule is:

I can rest once everything is finished

…you have accidentally created a life where rest never arrives.

Eventually, your body may force it.

You crash.

You get exhausted.

You can't do anymore.

Then you stop.

But being unable to continue isn't the only time you're allowed to recover.

There's a difference between intentionally choosing recovery and collapsing because the tank is empty.

Your Body Gets the Final Vote

One thing I teach constantly in restorative yoga is:

Your body gets the final vote.

Not me.

Not the picture of the pose.

Not the person beside you.

If you're uncomfortable, adjust something.

Add another pillow.

Move your legs.

Change the angle.

Come out.

Choose something else.

You do not earn extra yoga points for suffering quietly.

And honestly?

I think that philosophy belongs outside the yoga room too.

You may have planned a hard workout today.

But how does your body actually feel?

You may technically have another hour available to work.

But do you have another hour of useful capacity?

Other people may want something from you.

That doesn't mean your energy is automatically available to give.

Your plan matters.

Your commitments matter.

Your body gets a vote too.

Listening to Your Body Isn't the Same as Avoiding Everything

Now, before somebody uses this blog post as permission to never do anything uncomfortable again…

That's not what I'm saying. 😂

Sometimes you don't feel like working out and ten minutes into the workout you're so glad you started.

Sometimes something feels hard because it's new.

Sometimes discipline is exactly what's needed.

Sometimes following through feels better than backing out.

Listening to your body isn't asking:

What would require the least effort?

It's asking:

What kind of support do I actually need today?

That's a different question.

You learn to recognize the difference between:

“I don't feel like doing this.”

and

“My body genuinely needs recovery.”

That skill is discernment.

And the only way to build it is to actually listen.

Rest Doesn't Have to Be a Whole Event

Another reason women don't rest?

We've made rest too damn elaborate.

A weekend away.

A massage.

A spa day.

A completely empty schedule.

A 90-minute yoga class.

Those things can be wonderful.

But if that's the standard, most working women with families are going to spend a lot of time waiting.

Rest can also be:

Five minutes with your legs on the couch.

A supported child's pose.

Lying on the floor with a bolster under your knees.

Ten minutes before dinner.

Fifteen minutes before bed.

Rest doesn't need to be dramatic to be real.

That's one of the reasons I created the Rest & Recover Method around just a few poses held for a few minutes.

I want rest to fit inside actual life.

Not the fantasy life where nobody needs anything from you and the laundry magically folds itself.

Recovery Supports Strength

There is another belief I really want to challenge:

Rest isn't keeping you from being strong.

Recovery helps support strength.

I want you lifting weights.

Walking.

Moving.

Doing things that challenge you.

And I also want you recovering well enough to continue doing those things.

The goal isn't to become somebody who does less with her life.

The goal is to have enough capacity left to actually enjoy the life you're working so hard to maintain.

There's a difference.

You Don't Need Permission

If your body says she's tired tonight, you don't have to wait until you're exhausted enough to prove it.

You don't need to complete another task to qualify.

You don't need a permission slip.

You can take five minutes.

You can put the phone down.

You can lie on the floor.

You can breathe.

You can stop.

Not forever.

Just for now.

Because rest isn't something your body earns after doing enough.

Recovery is one of the ways you take care of the body doing all that doing.
